LinkBits: 3D Printing News for the Week of February 21st

Another week, another round of LinkBits: your source for brief bits of news from the 3D printing industry. The industry is booming and so are we, so here is a list of stories that we couldn’t quite fit into our complete article schedule for the week.  Bon Appéprint!

Zmorph is Looking for Resellers

Zmorph 3D Printer

Polish 3D printer manufacturer Zmorph is currently looking for resellers to carry its line of versatile 3D printers. With a printer capable of using a huge variety of toolheads – for 3D printing, CNC routing, food printing, and more – the company already sees distribution in the Netherlands, Turkey, France, Finland, Sweden, Russia, and Switzerland and is looking to expand their reach even further, even to the USA.  If you’re interested, you can submit your shop to Zmorph through this webpage.

Left Shark Back on Shapeways

3D printed left shark from fernando sosa

Remember #LeftShark? Neither do I! But there are a few people who do, including Katy Perry’s lawyers, the artist who modeled a 3D printable version of the Super Bowl XLIX Half-Time backup dancer turned Internet meme, and Shapeways.  After removing the 3D print from their site, when Katy Perry’s lawyers sent a cease-and-desist letter, the 3D printing service bureau has, once again, allowed Fernando Sosa to sell his artwork through their site.  Now, let’s all do what the Left Shark dancer wishes we would do and forget any of this ever happened.

FabLab Symposium

Next month, March 23-25, Gateway Technical College will host the United States Fab Lab Network Symposium 2015, a two-day event dedicated to the growing FabLab trend.  Attendees will be treated to workshops, demos, and speakers, including Congressman Bill Foster (D-Ill.), who unsuccessfully attempted to pass legislation to establish a national FabLab network, and Dr. Neil Gershenfeld of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Center for Bits and Atoms, arguably the world’s first FabLab.

Sculpteo Releases New Metals

Somehow, while covering i.materialise’s new range of 3D printable metals (18k yellow, white, and rose golds), I missed that Sculpteo had also announced new additions to their metals portfolio: Pink Gold, White Rhodium and Black Rhodium.  Sculpteo customers can now have brass or silver objects coated in rough, mirror polished, 22k gold plated, pink gold plated, white rhodium and black rhodium finishes

MyMiniFactory TV

My Mini Factory, iMakr’s 3D printing community, just launched a new service, currently in beta, called MyMiniFactory TV, in which 3D designers can broadcast their work live.  You can watch 3D modelers craft their objects live through the TV stream or broadcast your own work.  I’m still wrapping my mind around the concept, but it might be a great way to educate others on how one might create a specific 3D model.

Cricket Miniatures

This week, a start-up in Singapore launched a Kickstarter to fund a business 3D printing famous cricket players, coinciding with the Cricket World Cup 2015.  If you’re interested in supporting the campaign, head over to the KS page.

Filimprimante3D Sells Frictionless ig

Last year, we wrote about a new filament developed by German manufacturer igus capable of tribologic properties.  The filament is now being sold through French filament distributor Filimprimante3D which has just published a video demonstrating how parts printed with Iglidur require no lubricant. The company also published some files that can be printed with Iglidur that take specific advantage of this unique property.

Welp! That’s it for LinkBits this week! As they say in the picture shows:
