Hammacher Schlemmer Embraces 3D Printing with 3Doodler and 3D Systems Products

Hammacher Schlemmer, alternatively known for high-end luxury items and overpriced father’s day gifts, has just announced the addition of “The World’s First 3D Printing Pen” to its catalog of goods.  Though the title of World’s First may be arguable, as MakiBox may have created a prototype for such a device first, and even the “3D printing” part has been disputed, it’s safe to say that Hammacher Schlemmer is now selling a “The World’s First 3D Printing Pen”.  Moreover, the addition of the 3Doodler extends the company’s 3D printing product line even further.

The 3Doodler seems like a perfect addition to the retailer.  Not quite practical, but not unimpressive (personally) either.  General Manager of Hammacher Schlemmer, Fred Berns, explains how the extrusion of plastic material allows users to draw objects, saying, “Since the plastic hardens quickly, you can draw in the air to create a bird’s outstretched wings. You can also download blueprints of a 6″-tall Eiffel Tower or Istanbul’s Sultan Ahmed Mosque.”

In addition to the 3Doodler, which is retailing for $99.95 on the company’s eCommerce site, HS also offers a line of 3D Systems products, including the Sense 3D Scanner, an earlier version of the Cube, and the CubePro Duo.  The retailer is clearly going for sleek, consumer-friendly products.  As it’s just getting started with 3D printing goods, we may see more such devices listed on their site, soon.
