MakerBot Slashes Price of Its Digitizer 3D Scanner

When an OEM starts selling off its inventory at a drastically reduced RRP, even via large resellers, such as the case here, it usually means one of two things. Either it’s not competing well in the market, or, there’s a new marque on the way.

There is no evidence to support either of these theories however. But it is pertinent perhaps to note that the entry level scanner market is currently being flooded with new and innovative devices, many of them comparing favourably with the Digitizer. That said, history would possibly support the second theory — Makerbot do like surprises and they may well have held something back from CES to keep the momentum up later in the year.

However, what ever the reason, last night, MakerBot announced that the price of the Digitizer 3D scanner has been slashed by almost 50% via online market giant Amazon, where it can be purchased for $750, compared with the original price of $1,400. This is being promoted as a short term offer — the Digitizer will only be available at this sale price until this Friday, 7th February at Noon ET.

Makerbot’s own site, however, is still listing the Digitizer with only a 30% reduction, at $949.
