Calling All Makers: MakerBot 3rd Annual Hackathon Featuring GE's ChillHub

What kind of  appliances will your average homeowner 3D print in the future?

On June 13 and 14 MakerBot will be hosting their 3rd annual Hackathon at their headquarters in Brooklyn, New York. This year they will welcome their partner, FirstBuild, another equally exuberant community of designers and makers of home appliances to their community of innovators. The FirstBuild community was founded through the partnership of two giants, GE and Local Motors. The community encourages industrial designers, engineers and the public to work together to come up with innovative designs and prototypes in the home market and then bring them to life at the FirstBuild Microfactory.

This year, to shine a light on the FirstBuild and MakerBot partnership at Hackathon, the companies are holding a competition to see who can “Think Inside the Icebox.” The contest will have entrants working in small teams to design and print items for GE’s ChillHub, a refrigerator with several futuristic characteristics.

ChillHub features the ability to communicate with homeowners via a mobile app and USB ports. The refrigerator is also connected to the internet and has integrated power sources. The Makers will use MakeBot Replicator Desktop 3D Printers for prototyping their designs. A few past winners include a “Odor- Eating HotSpot” and a “Rad Reindeer” bottle holder.  The prizes include MakerBot 5th generation replicator 3D printers and a few other goodies.
