3DPI.TV – 3D Systems and Hershey Team Up to 3D Print Goodies

3D Systems has been explicit that one of their clearest paths forward in the 3D printing industry is the development of 3D printers that produce edible results. This was initially with teasers from the company’s CEO, Avi Reichental, who is known to have a sweet tooth and then with the acquisition of the Sugar Lab last year. At CES this year, 3D Systems went further and revealed the first real manifestation of 3D printing platforms for foods applications with the ChefJet series.

Now, however, 3D Systems has revealed that there is interest in 3D printed edibles from some of the world’s leading confectioners with the recent announcement that it has entered into a multi-year joint development agreement with The Hershey Company. This is the largest producer of quality chocolate in North America and a global leader in chocolate, sweets and refreshment — the plan is for 3D Systems and Hershey to explore and develop innovative opportunities for using 3D printing technology in creating edible foods.

It is interesting to note that the partnership is looking to co-develop a variety of 3D printed chocolate and non-chocolate products. The alliance is all set to combine Hershey’s world-class food science and manufacturing expertise with 3DSystems’ powerful 3D printing technology and know-how to deliver new consumer experiences.
