Maurizio Casella's 3D Printing is Now Getting into Some Serious Racing

Every time Maurizio Casella comes up with a new one of his 3D printed creations he gives us plenty of elements to write about. After delving into American, German, Italian and French cult vehicles, airplanes and historic ships, he has now gotten into some serious 3D printed racing: his newest model is an accurate replica of the Ferrari F1 for season 2015, officially known as SF15-T.

To recreate the vehicle driven by Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen, for the first time he did not use existing blueprints. That is why the actual number of parts is more limited compared to previous models. The F1 racecar is split into 10 different .stl files, entirely modeled for FFF/FDM systems.

Like all of Maurizio’s models, the Ferrari F1 is already on sale from his official page on the most popular 3D model networks: 3DaGoGo, Cults, Pinshape, Threeding, 3Dwaters and Shapetizer, for $4.99. Unlike other projects, which originated from Maurizio’s own passion for cars and 3D printing, along with his impressive 3D modeling talent, this latest “toy” was originally conceived as an “all-in-one” piece version, 3D printable in sandstone with 3D systems 660Pro, commissioned by 3D Systems’s distributor 3DZ.

In the full color sandstone version it might even be possibile to add the sponsors which make the vehicle even more recognizable. For filament version this looks very unlikely at this point, unless perhaps by using the new computational hydrographic coloring method recently revealed at SIGGRAPH. Then it might look something like this:

I remember just a few months ago, when Maurizio asked me about the possibility of launching a 3D model based business, it seemed like a very remote possibility. Over the past few months the Maurizio has kept creating new models, new model marketplaces have launched and his business, although still very small, is steadily growing and expanding.

He now has approximately 20 3D models for sale. My personal opinion is that by the time will get to 100 this 3D modeling business might be running on its own legs. And it would be a form of distributed toy manufacturing at its best.
