GrabCAD and FATHOM Challenge You to Help Others with New Years Resolutions

With every new year comes new challenges and goals. This year, GrabCAD has decided to step in and help humans accomplish their resolutions. How you ask? Well, if your resolution is to have your own tiny Dalek army, they already have you covered.

However, if your goals fall a little left of extermination, then you might want to look into the “Make the Unmakable Challenge“. Manufacturing service bureau FATHOM and the 3D file sharing site GrabCAD have partnered to issue a challenge to makers everywhere. The “Make the Unmakable Challenge 1” is the first of three competitions that will be held throughout the year. This particular challenge is designed to coincide with the tradition of making “New Year’s Resolutions.” According to the challenge webpage, by the end of January, 36% of people have fallen off track with their resolutions. By the time the year is halfway over, 54% of people have dropped out. Challenge one asks the community to design products that will help people keep up with their goals for the new year.

Of course, many people are going to go with the usual list: lose weight, quit smoking, eat right, exercise, use political machination to seize the Iron Throne, be more practical with finances etc… However this challenge appeals to FATHOM’s stated ideals of “deep passion for improving the world we live in by leveraging the team’s creativity”, so we might hope for some slightly more creative products from this community of makers.

Contest entries must contain files as well as descriptions, while fitting a number of specific practical parameters listed on the site. The winner will get a $2,500 for FATHOM’s printing services, a custom trophy, and the honor of competing in the ultimate Unmakable Challenge. Runners Up get $100, a discount code, and a few other prizes. And the winner of the sacred Honorable Mention award gets a GrabCAD discount code. The Challenge began on February 24, 2015 and ends April 6, so get modeling!
