3DPI.TV – Bespoke 3D Printed Braces for Chronic Scoliosis

Patients suffering from scoliosis may now have an easier and more effective new treatment, thanks to 3D printing. In a pilot program, from 3D Systems, Bespoke 3D printed braces were personalized, then printed for children and young adults with scoliosis.

The traditional treatment for scoliosis is cumbersome, requiring a non-personalized brace that is worn around the torso. It reaches from the armpit to the hip and exerts counter-pressure against the ribs and hips. It needs to be worn for an average of 2-3 years constantly to prevent the need for invasive surgery. Because many young people have a problem with compliance to the traditional brace, a procedure called ‘full spinal fusion’, which affixes metal rods to the spinal column, is often inevitable. 3D Systems’ new Bespoke Brace has been designed to alleviate this issue.

For this bespoke application, prototype ‘check-socket’ brace fits to each patient. Once corrected, it is then digitized to create a digital reference underlay. Once digital, the brace is further manipulated and adjusted as needed. Finally, it is 3D printed using 3D Systems’ selective laser sintering process for optimal comfort, flexibility and durability.

The test saw a high level of compliance and wear thanks to the stylish aesthetics provided by the 3D printed model.

Dr. James Policy of Stanford University helped monitor the program. He said he had “never seen children respond so positively to a brace.” Part of the reason is the children feel they can look cool as they heal, something made possible when design innovation meets medical innovation.
