3D Printing

Karl Lagerfeld Showcases 3D Printed Chanel at Paris Fashion Week

Dehydrated Amadeus in sunglasses Karl Lagerfeld has done it again! Last night, at Paris Fashion Week, he sent a Chanel suit down the runway, but, this time, with a 3D printed twist. Although it isn’t entirely clear how much of the suit was printed, it appears that the square-cut shoulders and trim were made via Selective Laser Sintering. Lagerfield seems to confirm this, telling AFP, “The idea is to take the most iconic jacket of the 20th century and make a 21st century version… The vest is one piece, there is no sewing, it is moulded.”

The Johnny Cash-Antoinette hybrid went on to say that 3D printing “widens haute couture” and would be used more and more in the future. Although I agree with the latter statement, I’m skeptical of some of the claims coming out today by various news sites that there was an entire line of 3D printed dresses being shown at the event, or that this suit was printed in full. It appears that some of the detailing on the dresses was laser-sintered, beautifully I might add, and I hope we hear confirmation about the suit, but, there may be some over-hyping at play here, too. Lagerfeld is known for his hyperbole, after all, AND for his efforts to fat shame people around the globe, of course.

The California Raisin in a wig said of the laser-sintered couture, “What keeps couture alive, is to move with the times. If it stays like sleeping beauty in the woods in an ivory tower, you can forget it.”

Because, in my opinion, the information is lacking about the actual 3D printed aspects of Lagerfeld’s latest line, I leave you now with other, borderline to certifiably insane, things Karl Lagerfeld has said:

  • “The iPod is genius. I have 300.”
  • “No one wants to see curvy women.”
  • “If I was a woman in Russia, I would be a lesbian, as the men are very ugly.”
  • “I have no human feelings.”
  • “It would have been difficult to have an ugly daughter”
  • I hate ugly people… Very depressing.”
  • “Having adult children makes you look 100 years old. I don’t want that.”
  • “Kate Middleton has a nice silhouette and she is the right girl for that boy. I like that kind of woman, I like romantic beauties. On the other hand, her sister struggles. I don’t like the sister’s face. She should only show her back.”

Tres chic!
