Anyone can 3D Print a Robot Arm!

BCN3D Technologies has released the BCN3D Moveo, an innovative robot arm which has a 3D printed structure, and electronics that are controlled by Arduino software.
The Intention? The Departament d’Ensenyament was worried about the high prices students were having to pay for expensive materials whilst engaging themselves in their internships, so BCN3D stepped up a year ago, and brought students what they needed. This collaboration allowed them to reach to their goal, which was to make digital technology accessible to the masses.  The main focus of this aim was on education, as well as keeping this form of technology own for improvement. The open source robotic arm can be edited, improved and changed to suit the needs of the user, whilst being reproducible at a low cost. Educational applications for the arm include mechanical design, automatism and industrial programming. They can also be used for training purposes, as they cost far less than current industrial equipment.bcn3d2

One particularly important part of the development process for the BCN3D Moveo, was the assembly and fine tuning workshop, where 15 institutes in Catalonia worked with the machines at BCN3D Technologies. Since then, the institutes that took part already have their own Moveos in their own facilities, and presentation have been planned for these institutes to talk about their internship programs as well as talking about the robotic arms themselves. These presentations have been scheduled to take place during September this year.

Github and BCN3D

BCN3D is proud to announce that the files for the Moveo will available for anyone. The files themselves will be available to download on Github, a website where users worldwide can share their designs. The project itself was developed to help build and strengthen communities, so having these files readily available for anyone who needs them helps to extinguish the problem of exclusivity that some institutes face when planning the usage of funding.

The files that are available to download include both the STL files and CAD designs, so anyone can modify the models as they wish. Firmware upload manuals are also available, which are available in both English and Spanish.

Thanks to the inspiration of Departament d’Ensenyament and hard work of BCN3D Technologies, anyone can now edit and print their own robot arm without having to design one from scratch. BCN3D encourages potential users to create their own 3D printed robot arms, and share their work on social media using the hashtag #BCN3DMoveo.

About BCN3D Technologies

BCN3D Technologies is a Fundació CIM project with a clear goal: change the way the world is made. We offer to society the possibility of having access to digital manufacturing technologies, including them as an active asset.
We design and create domestic and professional 3D printers in a way that the user can learn with every print, thanks to our Open Source working method. Thus we transfer to society all the technical learning obtained during our product development.
