Open to funding on Kisskissbankbank, a European crowd funding site, a DIY 3D printed camera, OpenReflex, promises to allow users to recycle their lens(es). As of now, the initial version is available to download via instructables. OpenReflex hopes to salvage once operable lenses in a fully functional camera. All photos and explanations point to a solid product worth supporting, in this author’s opinion, for camera and 3D printing enthusiasts. Even though a kit would be available, the file promises to be fully printable with most domestic 3D printers.
OpenReflex features everything that a classic reflex camera has. A “sport” ViewFinder that lets you see the image in the shutter directly on a small screen on top of the camera. It also features a mechanical shutter that works every 1/50 seconds as well as custom back covers that you can switch depending on the type of film you’re using. All the pieces easily printable on a recent RepRap-like ABS 3D-printer without using support material. For prints with additional parts not readily printable, hardware stores have the missing pieces according to instructions at a reasonable price setting the overall cost well below purchase of a new camera of equal quality.
One of the well documented benefits of working with 3D printing is the customization that users stretch and adjust to their own needs. The OpenReflex promises the same ability to customize according to lens need and comfort for the photographer. With added financial support through kisskissbankbank, OpenReflex hopes to pour more resources and time into development in order to provide more options for customization and a higher quality for 3D printable files. As of now, the project embodies the spirit of 3D printing as an open source print. For a project that could easily exploit the needs of individuals hoping to recycle operational lenses, it is undeniably refreshing to see the open source quality boldly promoted. OpenReflex surges ahead on the right track of 3D printing production and availability making it a worthwhile investment.
