Molding the Sweetest Memories with 3D Printing

What’s better than 3D printing? Chocolate. And what’s better than chocolate? Chocolate photos made with 3D printing! Jason Lee of Somerville, Massachusetts has taken to Kickstarter to bring this delicious concept to the public with ChocoForm.

chocoform-3D-printed-mold-for-chocolateUsing a 3D printer and vacuum forming machine at work, Lee has begun creating edible 3D photographs out of chocolate.  The process is a simple one: Lee converts a photo to a layered 3D object and 3D prints it.  He then vacuum forms the print to create a negative from PETG plastic, which forms the basis for a food safe chocolate mold.  Lee throws the chocolate into the mold and, voila!, a chocolate photograph.

Lee’s employers may not be willing to let him use their equipment forever, so he’s hoping that the Kickstarter community will help him purchase his own 3D printer and vacuum forming machine with a humble $10,000 in funding.  For $99, you can purchase your own custom chocolate image through Lee’s campaign.  For about half that price, you can purchase the custom mold alone and cast your own personalized desserts at home.  Lee’s obviously got the high-cost wedding industry in mind, too, offering a Wedding Package of 50+ chocolate images starting at $249.
