3DPrinterOS Makes Its Cloud 3D Printing Open Source

After establishing a number of partnerships, adding compatibility for a number of 3D printers, and officially releasing their OS, 3DPrinterOS has made their cloud-based 3D printer management software open source, making it so that anyone can modify, refine, and adapt the cloud client for their own applications.

Cloud 3D Printing - 3DPrinterOS open sourceNow on Github, the 3DPrinterOS cloud client is being shared under the GNU Affero General Public License.  The start-up’s CEO, John Dogru, says of their motivation behind the open source release, “Our goal is to radically reduce the latency between design, manufacturing and distribution of physical products, at the point of need and time of need. Connecting 3D Printers to the cloud is an essential step towards the connected factory of the future. We are excited about the opportunities this release creates for our industry and beyond.” Dogru continues, “This open source release makes it simple for every user and manufacturer to access the power of 3D Printing through the cloud. Now any manufacturer, large or small, can modify, customize and build on top of this release to extend their functionality and make 3d printing easier for their users.”

The software already had a number of unique features, including auto-repair of files, cloud slicing, and the ability to stream directly from Pinshape to 3D printers.  With its open source license, anyone has the ability to improve and expand on these capabilities, including such features as: auto-detection and connection via USB and Ethernet Port, multiple printer management, three web cam control modules, printer drivers, and support for various operating systems (currently consisting of Windows, Mac, Raspberry Pi and Ubuntu GNU/Linux).
