Community Maker Space The Exploratory Hosts 3D Printing Class for Kids

Culver City’s The Exploratory has announced a children’s class for 3D character creation and 3D printing. But that’s just one of the many great educational classes and programs available for kids and adults to experience in this unique family friendly maker space.

When you generally think of a maker space it doesn’t bring to mind a place especially friendly for kids. They are usually cluttered with things that curious children should probably not have access to, the language tends to be a little saltier than most parents would appreciate and space and materials tend to be at a premium. But The Exploratory is a little different. With over 2,000 square feet there is plenty of room for kids to feel free to explore science and art without worrying about breaking anything. They offer experiences that cover all of the STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) fields of study, including ceramic classes, the creation of e-textiles, and making movies in Scratch. They even have preschool and discovery programs for toddlers.

The Beginner 3D Character Creation and 3D Printing class will help kids eight and over learn the basics of creating a digital 3D character and then help them 3D print it. They will start by using a simple ball of clay and a pencil to introduce them to the basics of sculpting, then they would be moved up to digital clay software where they will start sculpting virtually. Once the class ends their designs will be 3D printed for them to take home.

The class will last for six weeks starting on April 5th and will continue meeting every following Saturday from 4:00 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. The cost of the class for each child will be $120.00 – or $95.00 for members – and each class can accommodate up to 8 people. You can register for the class here.
