The Stockholm based company Teenage Engineering launched their much anticipated OP-1 Synthesizer last year, which received tons of media attention for such a niche product. The OP-1 is the all-in-one portable multi-function device incorporating a synthesizer, sampler and controller with tons of extra features to satisfy the budding artists.
The company has since come under some criticism due the high shipping costs associated with the orders for smaller accessories. According to their website, they have been unable to find suitable shipping deals for items like cranks, shafts and benders, so they came up with the idea for sharing the designs files for these items free of charge.
People with access to a 3D printer can now download the necessary SLT or STEP files from their website and print their own accessories as needed. This is small news in itself but it will be interesting to see how quickly the main household names start adopting a similar approach and offer their clientele CAD files to support their product offering.
