As technological advances strive for a universal presence, the personal aspect in wonderfully creative individuals springs into action with heart-strumming results. While customizable 3D printed jewellery becomes increasingly commonplace in its manufacturing process, individuals like Alwin Wong take it upon themselves to add their personal effort and purpose to a piece as intimate as an engagement ring.
Unbeknownst to his fiancée, Alwin spent months designing a special, tailor-made-for-her engagement ring. His efforts included revisions to determine proper cathedral strength, the claws that hold the diamond atop the ring, and adding the initials of him and wife love, Sarah. Once happy with the design, he sent it to Makerzone to test the design strength. After a few prints refining the initial design, Makerzone presented Alwin with the model. With a proper 3D print, Alwin took the design to a jewelleer to make the metal ring complete with stones of devotion. As if the 3D printed design and customization was not enough, Alwin sought the services of William Coleman courtesy of Etsy for a personalized ring box with an “S” emblazoned on the front of the wooden box. Within weeks, the ring was nestled in the box in Malaysia.
Presented with an inundation of devotion and personal craft, of course Sarah said yes. The story typifies the tender intimacy possible with modern technology and collaborations. Through software and online communication, a truly handcrafted symbol of unity and love formed. The final product echoes the sentimental elegance and beauty transferred from heart to hand to object.
