A New CGTrader Challenge: 3D Print Household Items for Real Options

The shot has been fired across the bow by CG Trader at traditional brick and motor consumer models. In their new contest, CG Trader asks the public to submit 3D printed household items as part of an effort to open minds to the self-reliance possible with 3D printing technology. Why must we rely on shopping for cutlery and other tools if we have a 3D printer? This is the question proffered for the challenge. The winner will receive a TAZ 4 3D printer from LulzBot among other prizes, but make sure to submit by the July 14th deadline.

While the contest puns with forks and other silverware options, all forms of household items may be submitted and may bring in a variety of prizes. Contestants can create varieties of cutlery, decorations and tools as part of the label “household items”. There are two categories: Best Home 3D Printable Portfolio and Best Home 3D Printable Model. All winners and runners-up receive t-shirts and filaments as well as cash prizes, but the best portfolio will take home the coveted 3D printer.

The contest is in good spirit and should enable some truly creative designs to see the light of day and consumer market. Yet the larger picture, and one intimated by the headline for the contest is the possible revolution in our consumer models offered by 3D printing. It may be so undermining to existing structures that anything above a whisper could draw caustic attention, but it is in the essence of this technology and something we cannot ignore. Yes, the material still must be purchased to print and yes, there will be artisan wares worth purchasing, but with 3D printing, it becomes a choice instead of a set path.
