Smartphone Gear Cases: A Great Example Of Home 3D Printing Production

Rong Guo of Toronto Cananda has been using 3D printers for a number of years. He has built various kinds of RepRap 3D printers such as the Prusa Mendel, Prusa I3 and Mix G1. He learned the tools to design simple things, such as repairing parts to creating complex components for his printers. Now, Rong has used his experience to create a series of iPhone cases that use fascinating cogwork and a range of colours to truly make the most of both computer aided design and home 3D printing. As his crowdfunding campaign launches let’s look at more details.

Rong has created a range of cases based around the premise of cogwork for the different smartphones. Each design offers on a unique take on an idea of the form and layout itself with the choice between white and yellow for the outer case – Rong will combine those main colour choices with different contrasting gears and the gear background panel for the best aesthetic outcome.

Rong says that, dependent upon the number of orders he aims to complete the manufacturing and shipping of all of the cases he creates from the crowdfunding campaign by the end of August. He will also ship out cases throughout the process, so Rong says that most of the orders should be received before that. He has really thought out the packaging it must be said: The packaging that the smartphone cover is very professional looking for a project that is essentially based in a home studio, it’s worth checking out almost as much as the glow-in-the-dark colours.

The video below sums up the project in a visual way very nicely, keep an eye out for that glow-in-the-dark version! You can check out the Kickstarter campaign here.
