An Italian cousin company of Enrico Dini’s D-Shape, Desamanera SRL, is bringing its own interesting, large-scale 3D printing technology to the United States, through an exclusive agency agreement with ChemCognition LLC in North Carolina. What makes Desamanera’s technology interesting is not so much the massive binder machines, essentially the same as Dini’s own D-Shape printers, as it is their MarmoLiquido™ finishing system, which applies marble finishes once the prints are complete. Now, the 3DP Business Directory reports that the entire package will be made available in the US as ChemCognition conducts market research and represents Desamanera’s products in North America.
As Davide Sher explained in his recent visit to Desamanera headquarters in the Veneto region of North East Italy, founder Antonino Italiano partnered with the Dini brothers, Enrico and Riccardo, when he first saw the 6 x 6 x 6 meter D-Shape platform in person. With the announcement of this new deal with ChemCognition, the size has grown even larger to an impressive 9 x 9 x 9 meter scale. The system combines eco-sustainable Zandobbio White dolomite rock with a dry binder and a liquid binder to fabricate objects that cannot be produced through traditional casting techniques. With such a large build volume, these objects can either be made to be quite huge, such as building structures, or numerous, such as stone sculpture pieces. One particular application that such a technology might be useful for is the preservation of archeological or historical stone artifacts. Fast and flexible, the system also allows for the recycling of unused binder.
I’m personally fascinated by Desamanera’s MarmoLiquido™, or liquid marble, finishing system. It may not be as mind-blowing as the shear scale of the D-Shape machine, but it allows the Desamanera team to coat objects in a variety of colors and textures, including a glow-in-the-dark finish that may be the only such marble product in the world. As beautiful as a stone print may be, Desamanera’s objects are made only more beautiful with the marble-based finish. So, it’s exciting to me that both the finishes and the enormous 3D printing systems will be brought to North America via Chem Cognition.
Established in 2015, ChemCognition LLC works to offer sustainable solutions for building materials, adhesives, and coatings. Claudio Manissero, the firm’s principal, is a bilingual Italian American whose firm has worked to create new chemistry-basd products, while also focusing on market development.With Desamanera, the firm will be looking for specific opportunities and market segments that could be served by the large-scale stone printing technology in the North American market. This includes creating overall market plans, as well as identifying industry partners and a customer base, providing local and technical support.

After obtaining their first phase of financing, Desamanera has established a team of experts in materials, marketing, and training, and relocated to an even larger facility. Soon, they may even need to set up a North American headquarters, as I’m sure that there will be a great deal of interest in what has the potential to be a game changing technology.
