Cruise the City of Angels as Cut Copy Explores LA with UV 3DP Filament

Australian band Cut Copy released stop motion 3D printed figures on a journey through Los Angeles. Cut Copy worked with PARTY for creative direction and with Masashi Kawamura in particular. Over 200 different figures set foot in front of the camera and came to fruition thanks to Stratasys 1200ES with UV reactive filament. That reactive filament gives the figures their glow as they navigate the street of the City of Angels.

Utilizing a back light to add glow to the figures, the stop-motion characters pulse against the neon lights of traffic and the ethereal hues on dark streets. As the couple collects discarded materials, the beats in the song creates an urgency in the scenes. It is perfect cruising music for vagabond meanderings in LA casting a romantic vibe on collective loneliness. Even in the lyrics, a chorus resounds, “We are the people. We are here alone. We are explorers and the beat goes on.” The journey continues in the song to the morning sun, the new beginning. It is a beautiful sentiment, the idea of being alone as “we”.

In more ways than one, Cut Copy has struck a harmonious chord with 3D printing. The explorers, pioneers finding their way often feel alone in their pursuits, yet there is an expansive community in the same state. The video captures the drifting scene of Los Angeles perfectly and the song strums the 3D printer in us, explorers.
