Using the Science of Adhesion to Make the Perfect 3D Printer Build Plate

Everything in a 3D printer, even the most basic FFF/FDM platforms, is based on science: physics, thermodynamics, material properties and even computer science all play a vital role in making the machines work. So why do we all use rudimental methods such as Kapton tape, Blue tape, hair spray or ABS dissolved in acetone to make the extruded plastic stick to the build platform? Well, ultimately, it makes 3D printing a little easier, but there’s no denying it can be an annoying, if simple, task.

GeckoTek 3D wants to fix all that using science, the science of adhesion. Inspired by a gecko’s ability to stick to any surface, the Cincinnati (OH) based start-up has developed a new build plate system that will supply the exact amount of adhesion needed to prevent warping while still allowing for easy part removal.

To do this GeckoTek 3D created a permanent coating made of spring steel, a low-alloy medium or high-carbon steel that has a very high hold strength and thus always retains its initial shape even after getting bent an infinite number of times. The coating replaces the traditional glass or acrylic beds and allows the plate to be gently flexed, so that even the most difficult parts can be easily removed This, by the way, is also science: if the points of contact between two surfaces diminish, so will the adhesion between them.

The spring steel plate will be available in various sizes and shapes to fit most FFF/FDM 3D printers in the market and it will come with a matching machined aluminium build plate with embedded magnets to hold the spiny steel substrate in place. Check out the video so get a better idea of how that will work.

GeckoTek 3D’s Build Plate is not the first attempt to solve one of the most annoying issues that affects all FFF/FDM adopters but it seems to be the most efficient solution proposed thus far. We will find out more on it very soon, when it hits Kickstarter, but it you are already sold on it, you can sign up to get updates and try to get in on the early bird bird offers on GeckoTek 3D’s website.
