Simbionix Formally embraced into the 3D Systems Fold

The growth strategy of 3D Systems sees the industry giant further its acquisition tally for this month — with Laser Reproductions and sister companies American Precision Prototyping (APP) and American Precision Machining (APM) already under its belt in August — by completing its acquisition of Simbionix. Simbionix is a global leader in 3D virtual reality surgical simulation and training and the acquisition further emphasizes 3D Systems’ focus on 3D printing within the medical sector, particularly since it acquired Medical Modeling earlier this year.

In a deal that sees Simbionix join the 3D Systems family for a cool $120 million in cash, the additive manufacturing behemoth thus augments its base clinical capabilities for complex personalised surgical procedures, 3D printed implants and patient-specific medical devices with leading 3D surgical simulation and training tools. 3D Systems projects immediately enhance cash generation to its non-GAAP earnings per share.

Simbionix was founded in 1997 andis a pioneer of patient-specific simulations. With a HQ facility in Cleveland, Ohio and an R&D centre in Israel, the company’s solutions are FDA-cleared and changing how medical professionals prepare for individualized surgical procedures.

Simbionix brings powerful technology, products, channels and domain expertise that complement our healthcare offerings and enhance our seamless digital thread for patient-specific healthcare. From the training room to the operating room, we are developing the digital thread for personalised medicine.”

The company’s products include some sixteen simulation platforms and over sixty interventional procedures spread across eight specialties. Thanks to the company’s international distribution network Simbionix products can be found in hospitals, simulation centers, colleges and other educational facilities in more than sixty countries.
