This week LA based 3D printing and resources blog Mold3d.com annouced that they are holding their first ever live 3D Printing workshop and will be featuring the Form1 as the in-class printer. The 3D Printing Workshop for Character Artists will instruct 3D modellers and designers new to 3D printing about how to turn their designs into highly detailed printable models and objects.

Just two months old, Mold3d.com has already made an impact within the 3D printing community. The blog is full of amazing 3D Printing tutorials and some pretty informative Q&A’s with a wide selection of artists. Their next move is the first in a planned series of workshops focusing on different aspects of 3D printing and 3D modelling. Not only will attendees have access to Zbrush to design a model during the workshop but they will be able to print the results on Formlabs highly popular stereolithography (SL) printer. The Form1 uses light reactive liquid resin and UV lasers to print and has become quite popular with 3D artists due to the high level of print detail, so getting to print your first design with one is a bit like learning to drive in a Corvette.

Day one of the workshop will be instructed by 3D sculptor and modeller Gio Nakpil, who modelled aliens for Star Trek and the Hulk in the recent Avengers movie. He will be focusing on using Zbrush to create 3D printable models and lecturing on the best ways to sculpt in 3D while keeping the requirements of printing in 3D in mind. The class will sculpt a 3D object during the workshop with the goal of it eventually seeing it 3D printed for them.

The second day of the workshop will be instructed by Mold3d co-founder Robert Vignone, himself an extremely talented digital artist currently employed by Dreamworks Animation. He will be leading a lecture on the philosophy behind 3D printing and will help the artists finish their 3D design. He will also instruct them on the best ways to optimize their sculpts for printing with the Form1, and show them how to clean and finish a 3D print. As a bonus, at the end of the workshop each attendee’s design will be printed on a Form1 and shipped directly to them.
