Free 3D Printable of the Week: Unconditional Surrender

Uploaded on Sketchfab as a 3D scan by CEO Alban Denoyel, the sculpture Unconditional Surrender by Seward Johnson is a tangible recreation of both a famous photograph and less well-known photograph representing the atmosphere of Times Square after the US declared victory over Japan, ending World War II.

All three versions of the famous V-J Day Kiss, from left to right: Alfred Eisenstaedt’s, Seward Johnson’s, and Victor Jorgensen’s.

While the massive 25-foot-tall, aluminum sculpture in NYC’s Times Square looks as though it resembles the famous photo V–J day in Times Square by photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt, Johnson, known for his uncanny sculptures, apparently based the piece after a lesser known photo of the very same kiss.  Because Eisenstaedt’s photo is protected under copyright by Life magazine, Johnson actually relied on Victor Jorgensen‘s photo of the event for his sculpture. You can see all three versions above, but, below, you can make your very own by 3D printing Alban’s scan of Johnson’s work.
