ExOne appoint new CEO

James L. McCarley will replace Kent Rockwell as CEO of U.S. 3D printing company The ExOne Company (NASDAQ:XONE).

Rockwell will remain with the company in a leadership role as Executive Chairman of the Board of Directors. In this position he will continue to be involved in strategic planning and its execution. Rockwell said,

“Our Board is committed to continuing our mission to bring binder jetting to the industrial production floor. We are pleased to add Jim as CEO, bringing his extensive experience in both operations and sales, particularly on the direct metals side of our business where we are strategically focused over the next several years. This is the perfect time to add Jim to our leadership team, having just finished a record second quarter and first half of 2016. His role as CEO is a critical component of our succession plan and will broaden and strengthen our management team, as I move to Executive Chairman and focus more on strategy.”

Rockwell helped found ExOne and led the company through it’s IPO in 2013. As mentioned, earlier this month ExOne reported record financial results for the second quarter of the year.

Lloyd Semple, Lead Independent Director of the Board said,

“The entire Board is extremely grateful to Kent for his outstanding leadership and continued commitment to ExOne. We are appreciative of the thoughtful and strategic succession planning process that resulted in today’s announcement. We look forward to Kent’s continued active and ongoing strategic leadership of ExOne in his new role as Executive Chairman.”

A long career in industry

Mr. McCarley, also know as Jim, joins ExOne from a long career in the metal and manufacturing industry. He is an electrical engineering graduate and his most recent position was as Executive Vice President – Operations at RTI International Metals.

As previously reported on 3DPI, RTI International Metals were acquired by metal supplier Alcoa in 2015. McCarley’s former employer is also a strategic investor in Norsk Titanium, a company targeting the industrial market for 3D printing.

This is not the first CEO position for McCarley. ExOne’s new Chief Executive Officer previously held the same position at General Vortex Energy, Inc. between September 2009 and May 2010. While at RTI McCarley was responsible for, “overseeing daily operations, asset and cash management, talent recruitment/retention, customer care, and growth strategy deploymentaccording to a statement released by ExOne.

ExOne president will retire at end of month

ExOne also announced the retirement of company President Hans Sack. Sack will begin his retirement at the end of the month. Commenting on this Rockwell said,

“We are thankful to Hans for his contributions to the Company, particularly with respect to his focus on global operations. We wish Hans the very best as he retires from ExOne to pursue other interests.”

In early trading shares in ExOne were trading up as the market received the news in a positive manner.

At 3DPI we’d like to welcome Jim to his new role and look forward to reporting on future events, building on the success Kent and his team have already demonstrated.
