Dyvsign’s New Phi ϕ Collection Elevates 3D Printed Ceramics to the Golden Ratio

Some say that creating art digitally through 3D printing is a process too “rigid” and mathematical to fully express artistic creativity. The truth is that mathematics has been an integral part of some of the greatest artistic masterpieces of all time and it continues to be used in artistic and creative works today. One (among many) creatives that is expressing her creativity using mathematics and 3D printing is Yvonne van Zummeren who’s design label, Dyvsign, has recently released a new collection — Phi ϕ —  of ceramic 3D printed jewelry.

Mona Lisa Golden RatioLike Botticelli’s breathtaking Birth of Venus, or Leonardo daVinci’s Mona Lisa and even parts of Athen’s Pantheon, the latest collection from Dutch designer Yvonne van Zummeren is based on the golden ratio, that is a particular ratio of 1.618 between two parts that form a particular shape (a rectangle in most cases but also a triangle or a pentagram/pentagon and even circles). This proportion, indicated by the greek letter ϕ (Phi) which makes it so that, by splitting one side of the geometric figure in two parts, one is exactly twice as long as the other.

Also known by terms such as ‘golden’ or ‘divine standard’, the golden ratio has been studied since ancient times and is considered ideal to convey a perception of beauty to the observer. Van Zummeren used it to create a mathematically accurate line of 3D printed ceramic pendants and earrings, where the golden ration is emphasized by a delicate gold leaf applied to the shorter part.

The collection, which was presented during the Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven recently, is the first presented by Dyvsign which uses ceramics. It completes a selection which also includes the nylon laser sintered and gold plated steel Classic Collection (which recently introduced the new La Gerbe earrings and necklaces) and the nylon and metal Russia Collection, based on traditional Russian artistic symbolism.

Phi currently includes three different shapes 3D printed in ceramics (Circles, Beam and Pentagon Lines), is also available in different color finishes, retailing for €99. The collection also includes two more pieces titled “Lines” – a necklace and earrings – which are part laser sintered in nylon (black) and part gold plated stainless steel, with the necklace available for €99 and the earrings for €124.
