CGTrader & 3D Systems Launch a 3D Printed Art Challenge

Art is one of the more open — and enticing — disciplines when it comes to 3D printing. For many existing and new artists 3D printing is proving to be a fantastic tool that allows them to encapsulate their visions and create new experiences for the end user in ways unimaginable prior to the emergence of the tech.

Having recently celebrated a major milestone with its 100,000th user,  3D content host CGTrader is focusing on offering its growing community a well-rounded experience. To that end, CGTrader is joining forces with one of the biggest players in the 3D printing industry, 3D Systems, to inject some inspiration into the field of 3D printed art by launching an artistic design challenge.

Marius Kalytis, the founder and CEO of CGTrader commented: “The vast sea of opportunities made possible with the adoption of 3D printing is even more promising when the technology lands in the hands of 3D artists. We are exceptionally excited about the art challenge because we’ve partnered with 3D Systems, one of the market leaders, and that should send a strong message to all participants. Conventional designs won’t do this time.”

Thus, the challenge focuses on bringing art closer to home, and seeks to explore the ways people can artsy up their living space through new design thinking. The competition wants entrants to consider entries for furniture, wall art, sculpture, product design or home decor. Among other valuable prizes, the overall winner of the Best Portfolio category will be awarded with a CubePro 3D printer, with a retail value $2,799.  The winner of the ‘Best Model’ category will receive a 3Doodler pen.

The 3D Systems Art Challenge will run until the 11th of January, 2015, so if you’re inspired to take part, or have artistic designs hiding away on your hard drive somewhere, why not take a shot?

I have to say though – I also wonder if there is something more in this story than just the competition. Are these two companies on a first date? [Pure speculation on my part]
