Candles with an Edge – 3D Printing and the Natural World

Have you ever heard of accurately modelled mountain candles?

No?

Well they exist!

Bradley Swift, of Cascadia Candle Co. is a beekeeper and avid lover of the local scenery of the Pacific Northwest in the USA, and wanted to create something new from his beeswax. After founding Portland Bee Balm five years prior, being surrounded by blocks and blocks of beeswax, he came to the decision that he wanted to make beeswax candles. “I waited because I wanted to make something special and unique. Something that didn’t already exist in the world. Something I could have in my home, that reminds me of the amazing spaces right outside my door.” says Swift.

Using accurate scans of the mountains he chose, he and his friends Luke and Ted were able to create accurate models of the mountains which could then be printed. The printed models were then used as masters, moulded in silicone, and then the silicone moulds were used to cast the candles. The mountains which were modelled were:

  • Mount Hood
  • Mount Rainier
  • Mount Saint Helens

Each and every step has been experimented with and thought through, from casting, to wick selection to the quality of the beeswax. “You can see exactly where you went on a hike. You can see every glacier, every ridge, every valley. It’s just all right there in front of you.” Swift says. Printing at such a high level of detail as well as casting in silicone has allowed for all this detail to be picked up by the wax when it is cast.

You don’t even have to choose to have you candles cast in beeswax when you pledge for this interesting campaign. They also offer soya candles which produce a far whiter result, but just as much a candle as any other that will be produced.

Cascadia Candle Co. offers both small and larger sizes of their mountain candles, and even casts the larger mountains in concrete for those who want a more permanent addition to their desk, shelf or windowsill.

I certainly look forward to these candles making an appearance across the world, no matter the climate!
