Big Hero 6 Contest Will Have Children’s Robot Dreams Come True with 3D Printing

Disney continues to open up to 3D printing at many different levels. One of the most recent ways is through the fascinating experiments being conducted by the Disney Research division, while another is through the innovative marketing activities of its Italian branch, which is supporting the release, next December 18th, of the Big Hero 6 movie — by 3D printing a robot.

Not just any robot, though. Big Hero 6 is an animated movie about Baymax, a big inflatable robot that acts as a Personal Sanitation Operator. Disney set up a contest (taking place from October 21st to December 21st), asking children to send in their own robot designs.

Every week the best designs will be selected and will receive a 3D printed replica of their dream robot. At the end of the contest a selected jury will choose the 10 designs that stand out for originality, creativity and adherence to the contest’s theme. The best one among them will receive the grand prize: a private projection of Big Hero 6 for 30 people and, of course, a 3D printed version of the winning design.

Taking a look at the first submitted entries so far, there are quite a few that would make great candidates for “3Dimensionalization” into the physical world. And maybe even inspire a few stop-motion animated sequels….
