3D Systems is Hitting Up NYC's 3D Print Week in a Big Way

3D Systems has made an announcement from their South Carolina headquarters: they are heading to New York next month, and they’re bringing their “3D Printed Lifestyle” with them to Meckler Media’s 3D Print Week.  While there, they are going to set up a Cubify® Pop Up Shop at the 3D Print Design Show.  Then, they will be running a 3DS Design Challenge focused on decor and furniture designed with the theme “Home of the Now” .  They will also have a presence at an education event organized by Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.

Designing The Future Competition:

3DS is launching a furniture and design competition, titled “Designing the Future.” With the theme “Home of the Now”, the idea of the competition is to challenge designers to create “designed-for-3D-printing” home decor and furniture.  Hopefully, designers will quickly catch on to the fact that traditional design rules and constraints are of no concern, and will embrace the geometric complexity that 3D printing has to offer.  If you win, your design will be sold as limited edition items on 3DS’ Cubify, and the proceeds will go to the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum. The winner will see their design realized and also win a Cube 3D printer.  Not too shabby. The competition has already taken off and runs until April 15, 2015.  Check here for more information and the full set of rules.

Cubify Pop Up Shop:

All throughout 3D Print Week New York, 3DS will pop up its Cubify Pop Up Shop.  In it, you’ll find what they consider to be the best 3D printable fashion, decor, craft, toys, 3DMe® collectibles and, of course tech gear – from 3DS’ flagship consumer 3D printers, the Cube and EKOCYCLE Cube, to SenseTM 3D scanners and quadcopter kits. 3DS will also be selling products from its own fashion and home brand, FreshFiber.   It will make room for its partner brands too, like: NOOKA, United Nude, 360Heros, and Makies. If you weren’t already aware, Cubify is available as a mobile and desktop app for iOS, Android, Mac and PC.

Event at the Cooper Hewitt Design Center in Harlem:

On April 18, 2015, 3DS will offer an introduction to 3D printing for families and children to learn more about the technology through hands-on workshop events organized by the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum. The free workshops aims to introduce kids ages 7 to 12 to creative problem solving using 3D printing technologies.  It will also introduce them to the design process, with activities that allow them to use 3D software and 3D scanning themselves. Advance registration is required.
