3D Printing Has its Place in Martian Settlements, According to NASA

Is there life on Mars? Outlook uncertain, but there probably will be someday, thanks to future human colonists.  If we can get our act together, we may just be able to get to the Red Planet and set up shop.  And, when we do, NASA has some plans for what life will be like. Among the features of life on Mars is, of course, the fabulous fabricating technology of 3D printing.

In addition to self-sufficient pods where astronauts will live in work and the type of gear that will be used to protect Mars dwellers from the harsh environment, NASA’s video below states that 3D printing will be used to create parts while away from Earth. While it looks a bit like a MakerBot Replicator 2X, the printer will likely be a bit more robust, to say the least. Already space printing is proving useful aboard the International Space Station, where they’ve been able to 3D print a wrench, among other practical objects.

What homes on Mars will look like NASA revealed what homes on Mars will be like — and we don’t have to wait long.

If the NASA video matches up with reality, we may see such a setup being established as soon as 2030. Until then, we’ll have to build the foundation for that project. This means more 3D printing aboard the ISS, building habitats on Mars, and establishing a firm educational program for training the next generation of astronauts. Then there can be life on Mars.
