The 3D Printed NOMOON Speaker is Totally NOT a Death Star

Maker and engineer Rich Olsen has posted a great tutorial for 3D printing your own set of parametric speakers that are totally NOT a moon or star with a death theme and Disney Lawyers should totally not try to suggest that it has anything to do with Star Wars. The NOMOON is a sphere-shaped, 3D-printable, parametric speaker generator was created in OpenSCAD. The speaker is completely customizable in a basic OpenSCAD install, or it can be adjusted using the Thingiverse Customizer.

A parametric speaker uses specific geometric shapes to focus sound in one specific direction, rather than blasting sound waves out as widely as possible, like most speakers. Think of it as a sniper rifle, while a standard speaker would be a shotgun. Parametric speakers are ideal for small spaces, desks, and home theater systems that pair them with a subwoofer.

Unless you’re familiar with OpenSCAD, the Thingiverse Customizer might be a better option for anyone who wants to create their own NOMOON speakers. While there isn’t quite as much freedom to alter or customize the 3D model on Thingiverse, it will allow you to make just about any changes required for the type of drivers being used on your system. The internal diameter, wall thickness, speaker opening, bass port, and wire openings can all be adjusted, and the size of the sphere can be altered as well. Take a look at this video of the NOMOON being printed and assembled:

Olsen used his MakerBot Replicator 2 to print the NOMOON, using a basic silver PLA filament. The model requires no supports, however some of the lower layers may show some curling, so post-processing may be required. Olsen suggested that an enclosed or heated build chamber could minimize the effects however.

You can find Olsen’s entire build tutorial on his Nothing Labs blog, and you can find the STL files on Thingiverse. If you decide to alter the original design, I would highly suggest that before you print your own NOMOON, you make sure that all of your exhaust ports are properly shielded.
