Mcor, a 3D printing company dedicated to bringing the technology to the masses, has partnered up with Staples Printing Systems Division. The outcome of this collaboration will be called a 3D printing service offered by Staples, called Staples Easy 3D, a new online market for all things 3D. What differentiates this venture from other companies offering online services (such as Shapeways, Ponoko, Kraftwurx etc) is Staples Easy 3D’s bricks and mortar chain. This provides customers with the option of picking up their 3D printed objects personally, if the conventional option of snail mail seems inconvenient for the eager uploader/buyer.
The intent here is quite clear – to establish a presence in the real world as well as on line to make the technology real and accessible.
Wouter Van Dijk, President of the Staples Printing Systems Division in Europe explains the strategical move further: ”Given our market leadership in commercial print, why would we ever stop at two dimensions? Customised parts, prototypes, art objects, architectural models, medical models and 3D maps are items customers need today, in a more affordable and more accessible manner. Mcor will help us to keep prices low, quality high and colour brilliant as we meet the demand.”
Dr. Conor MacCormack, Mcor Technologies’ co-founder and CEO, sees the new business venture filling a relevant and distinguishable gap in the market: ”Although 3D printing is evolving on a similar path to 2D printing, there’s no sign that every home will have a 3D printer right away. Until that time, consumers will look to service bureaux. Staples is uniquely positioned to become the pre-eminent service bureau to the world, and we will help them deliver the highest [3D printing] quality and value. Staples Easy 3D is a breakthrough service in innovation and access to 3D printing for consumers and businesses alike.”
This is big news from Mcor and it will resonate across the whole 3D printing sector. The service will launch in Q1 next year, but only in in Belgium and the Netherlands to begin with. However, the goal is to penetrate other markets quickly and we will be monitoring this process closely and update you as soon as anything further develops.
