Metal 3D Printing and Fusion Implants Are On the Royal Agenda

UK-based industrial 3D printer manufacturer, Renishaw, recently installed two new SLM platforms in the additive manufacturing facility at the University of Liverpool, which will support a range of new R&D projects. While not much can be revealed at this time, according to Chris Sutcliffe, my man on the inside (pictured centre below, with Prince Andrew on the left, and Simon Scott), the new machines will allow for the development of new machine control systems as well as the development of new materials systems … more details are set to emerge on this soon.

However, the new machines, along with all of the other additive equipment at the Liverpool faculty, were demonstrated to HRH Prince Andrew this week when he visited the University and one of its successful commercial spin-outs  — Fusion Implants.  The company showcased the Fusion TTA implant to Prince Andrew and explained how this new veterinary option has been on limited release for the last six months. Following the successful limited launch of the implant, which cures cruciate ligament lameness in dogs, it is all set to go on general release in the next month and represents the first AM veterinary implant to be mass released into referral practice in the UK.

After the royal visit, Fusion Implants will be developing the tech further, working towards a series of Fusion TTA implants to cater for different patient sizes and, then, ultimately aiming at the development of breed-specific implantology.
