Local Motors Take the 3D Printed Car Prototype for a Test Drive

The news from Local Motors is coming thick and fast, which is hardly surprising considering the team’s goal of 3D printing a car before the end of the year.Last week saw a further milestone reached for the all-electric 3D printed car from Local Motors. Well, a couple actually. There were celebrations when the team saw the car sitting on all 4 wheels and the power-train installed. This was superceded by the fitting of the motor and the battery, which in turn meant, of course, that the car had power! This lead to only one thing — the very first test drive. After Thursday of last week saw the motor and battery from the donor vehicle (a Renault Twizy) arrive at the Phoenix, Arizona factory, it was quickly and successfully installed into the main structure of the first prototype of the 3D printed car. As has been reported, the first production model will be produced in public, at the International Manufacturing Technology Show (IMTS), in Chicago in September.
