Fillamentum teams with Tomas Bata University designer to build 3D printed electric bike

Czech 3D printer materials manufacture Fillamentum has worked with industrial designer František Dvořák to make a 3D printed electric motorcycle hood.

Presented at this week’s Formnext exposition in Frankfurt from 13 – 16 November 2018, Dvořák’s motorcycle won an award for its design from the rector of Tomas Bata University in Ziln, Czech Republic.

In total, the motorcycle is built from 66 parts and uses Fillamentum’s high strength CPE filament (also known as PET or UPET) for the hood. According to Dvořák, this material choice was “crucial” to his project.

Fillamentum motorcycle collaboration

Fillamentum not only produces top-quality materials for 3D printing, but it also enjoys cooperating with printers, idea-makers, architects, and most importantly: designers. These are just the professions that often make use of rapid prototyping where 3D printing is a great help.

Dvořák made the motorcycle as part of his final project at Tomas Bata University and under a commercial assignment from Czech electric motorcycle manufacturer Kuberg s.r.o..

According to Dvořák, “The machine’s concept uniquely combines the best qualities of a city scooter and adds the wild DNA of Dakar racing motorcycles. Expected technical parameters: 55kW power, 300 km distance on one charge.”

66 parts, 43 days and 2.5 km of filament

The creation of the prototype design reportedly took 10 months from start to finish, but the motorcycle hood itself was made in 43 days. It was 3D printed in the 66 segments on on a Průša desktop 3D printer, and 2.5km of Fillamentum CPE HG100 was used in the process.

Dvořák’ explains, “The right choice of materials was the most important to me. After experimenting with ASA and ABS, I’ve decided to use the CPE material for printing, specifically the CPE HG100 because it seemed like the best fit,”

“It’s very solid and heat-resistant, and what’s more, it has excellent impact tenacity – it was crucial for my project.”
