Recently, the “Edison Cup” Students Industrial Design Competition has highlighted the ongoing Shanghai Design Biennial. This competition is jointly held by the Shanghai foreign exchange center of science and technology, GE and UnionThai. Student teams from Fudan University, East China University of Science and Technology, Shanghai Second Polytechnic University and Shanghai DianJi University will design and produce their most creative works in this year’s design biennial and compete for the final award.
This competition contains two parts. The first part is the intelligent street light industrial design based on the industrial Internet of Things. The other part is the remote management web design for the intelligent street lights. This competition aims to arouse university students’ passion and interest in intelligent city design and help them discover their potential in industrial design.
Before handing designs into the competition’s judging panel, the contest submissions will be 3D printed on Union Thai SLA industrial 3D printers. The top three teams will be disclosed at the Shanghai Exhibition Centre on 3rd September.
The Chinese research center of GE has been constantly innovating in the 3D printing industry. Not only do they care about the technology, they also pay much attention on the design itself.
As for Union Thai, it has been stretching its business from the domestic market to the overseas market over the years. In addition, it puts emphasis on the 3D printing education and promotion among students at all levels.
Maybe we could see “Edison Cup” as an activity that combines both 3D printing applications and design innovation, which will be an excellent platform for talented young people to show their work.
