Children’s Drawings Brought to Life with 3D Printing

Crayon Creatures is a very interesting project from designer Bernat Cuni. The idea is to take a children’s drawing and turn it into a 3D figurine by modelling a digital sculpture and turning it into a real object using 3D printing technology.

The figurines are made from full color sandstone and are approximately 10 cm tall. The final product that comes out of the 3D printer is hard, slightly brittle and rigid.

Looking at the 3D design process, it is almost like inflating a balloon. It starts with defining the contour lines and then creating a plane where the drawing is projected as a texture and extruded. Finally certain pressure physics are applied to soften the shape.
