Breaking Bulbs Turn on the 3D Printed Light for “The One Who Knocks”

Swedish based Gässling now offers light bulbs manufactured — by way of 3D printing — to represent the moment of shattering. The design came from the mind of the owner of Gässling, Joakim Christoffersson. There are currently three options available for purchase and they all embody the intention of the designer.

“I wanted to challenge myself and create objects which would not be possible to produce using traditional manufacturing methods. The goal with the Breaking Bulbs project was to explore 3D printing and find out how far I could push the technology. It’s a project which lives somewhere in between art and design,” says Joakim.

Bullet meet bulb, Wrecking bulb, and Oops I dropped the bulb are the three current editions available for purchase through Gässling. Each bulb runs just under 400 euros at the starting price. It is couture lighting for the artistic room with a dash of Elvis-shot-the-TV.

The most fascinating aspect of the bulbs is their ability to prolong a moment. The smashing, breaking, destruction of a traditional model is no longer a fleeting ephemeral dash we hoped lasted longer, lingering in frozen time instead of at the whim of memory. This wrangling of Time becomes possible due, as Christoffersson admits, to 3D printing, a form of manufacturing allowing concepts to finally see light and form. In the Breaking Bulb, we see movement stilled, destruction wrought by creation. The light is on, what can you see?
