Construction 3D printing firm Alquist has introduced its A1 Series robotic arm platform, backed by the first large-scale commercial deployment of the technology.
Fourteen units have changed hands through a combined purchase involving equipment dealer Hugg & Hall and full-service general contractor FMGI, twelve of the larger A1X configuration and two standard A1 units earmarked for educational institutions and workforce training initiatives across the country.
The rollout marks a meaningful shift for the company, moving away from demonstration projects toward repeatable, contractor-ready delivery through a novel partnership model with national retailers including Walmart.
“3D printing is no longer experimental, it’s now a compelling and viable project delivery option,” said Patrick Callahan, CEO of Alquist. “With the launch of the A1 Series and this agreement with Hugg & Hall and FMGI, we’re entering the next phase: widespread commercialization of a technology that brings speed, efficiency and reliability to some of the largest builders in the country.”

Two Systems, One Platform, Built for the Field
The A1 Series comprises two distinct configurations serving different ends of the market. The base A1 is a compact unit designed for trade schools, high schools, colleges, and workforce development programs. The A1X is a rail-mounted, larger-footprint system built for general contractors and developers working on residential, commercial, and infrastructure projects at scale.
Both automate the construction of structural walls and foundational infrastructure elements, reducing labour requirements, material waste, and project timelines relative to conventional building methods, and run on Alquist’s proprietary software platform, which manages everything from setup through active printing to breakdown, with real-time job site visibility throughout.
“Robotic performance outside of a controlled demo depends on far more than motion control.” said Andrew Lycas, Alquist’s chief technology officer. “We’ve focused on integrating advanced robotics software and scalable hardware, informed by data driven‑, field tested‑ operational practice, to create a system that performs predictably and accurately amid the variability of real jobsites.”
The A1X sits at the center of a wider commercial program announced late last year, involving Walmart, FMGI, Hugg & Hall, and other retail partners, to deliver over a dozen 3D printed commercial structures across the United States, the largest deployment of its kind in the country’s history.

Commercial Construction Is 3D Printing’s Next Proving Ground
Construction 3D printing has proven the technology works. The harder challenge is getting it to the contractors and developers who actually build at scale. Unlike aerospace or medical, the construction sector does not move through institutional procurement or formal qualification cycles, it moves through jobsite reliability, ease of operation, and cost per square foot. That is why how a system reaches the market matters as much as what the system can do.
Peers in the space have taken different routes to the same destination. ICON, which secured $56 million in Series C funding in 2025, has deployed its construction-scale technology across more than 245 homes and structures spanning residential, commercial, and military applications, and has since launched its Titan programme specifically to place robotic construction systems in the hands of builders rather than limiting use to ICON-led projects.
Elsewhere, 14Trees attracted investment from Amazon’s Climate Pledge Fund alongside Holcim and British International Investment to fund deployment of its construction printing technology across pilot projects in Europe and the United States, targeting low-carbon data centres, large-scale buildings, and utilities.
Each of these efforts reflects the same strategic reality: the construction 3D printing sector has moved beyond proof of concept. The competition now centers on commercialization, on who can deliver reliable, contractor-ready systems through established channels, at economics that make sense for the broader building market.
