Cgtrader Wants your 3D printed May-Mays

3D printing and computer graphics marketplace and design hub cgtrader.com wants you to find a creative way to 3D print some memes and make them go viral. The person who earns the biggest viral showing can win themselves a brand new Taz 3 3D printer. Such prize. Wow.

3d printing such doge

I promise, that was the only doge-speak that I’ll use in this post. Although I did have the rules of the challenge written out in some, if I do say so myself, pretty great doge-ese.

Cgtrader.com regularly has contests and challenges designed to get people to push the boundaries of 3D printing and have fun while doing it. Their latest challenge is a simple one, 3D print any of the dozens of ridiculously recognizable internet memes and the person who scores the most points based on likes and shares will win. The prize pool is pretty sizable and more than enough to make this challenge worth participating in. There will be two categories, one for the best model and a second for the best meme portfolio with two runners up for each category.

Here’s a breakdown of the prize pool:

Winner: Best Meme 3D Printed Portfolio Two Runners-up: Best Meme 3D Printed Portfolio

Winner: Best Meme 3D Printed Model Two Runners-up: Best Meme 3D Printed Model

All entries must be uploaded to Cgtrader.com and they must be printable and downloadable. You have until April 14th 2014 to make your memes viral, which isn’t a lot of time, so make them good. But if you are planning to participate, if I may offer some advice, don’t be obvious. This is the internet after all, let’s not upload a bunch of 3D printable reposts. If there is anything that the Internet likes to do it’s pat itself on the back for being clever over, and over again. Memes are essentially just big in jokes that basically, well, everyone is in on. Don’t be that guy making the same joke multiple times because you just think no one heard it. We heard it the first time, it wasn’t funny, sorry.

3d printing meme

Like most people I could pretend to be above enjoying an internet meme once in awhile, but I just spent far too long looking at and laughing at pictures of mini 3D printed Sad Keanu and his adventures to really sell my intellectual superiority. No, memes can be pretty funny from time to time. That being said, I believe that memes should generally stay on the internet. Internet memes in the real world are sort of like white people quoting lines from the Dave Chappelle Show. I’m not saying that it’s a bad idea, I’m just saying that depending on the quote, it is potentially a bad idea.

Although I won’t deny that I kind of want a mini Sad Keanu. Head on over to Cgtrader.com for all the contest details.
