With Young People Like Carson Engaging with 3D Printing — The Future is, Indeed, Bright

Inspiring individuals are nothing new across the 3D printing community. But the latest one, who made contact with me last week, is a young man called Carson Madsen. Aged 14, Carson is using his enthusiasm for 3D printing, his Solidoodle 2 3D printer and his passion for creating and building to start a business — from his basement.

Currently working his way through 8th grade in Marietta, Georgia, Carson was introduced to 3D printing a few years ago: “I was amazed at what it could do. I knew that it would change the world of manufacturing.” As a result, Carson told me he “saved and saved and finally got one.” And by one, he is referring to his own 3D printer. So this is a young man, who at the age of 10 or 11, was able to comprehend the potential of a specific technology, determine that he wanted to be involved and be disciplined enough to do it.

Right now, Carson revealed that he is running his embryonic business through two online services — makexyz  and fiverr — to produce 3D prints to order both locally (through makexyz) and nationally (via fiverr). The purpose of Carson’s endeavours is “to earn money for my college and future,” while “helping people [to] use this amazing technology.”

Carson is in the process of trying to build his own website for the 3D printing service he offers.

I don’t know about you, but I, for one, think this young man’s future is extremely bright. With perspicacity and tenacity of this magnitude at age 14, one can only imagine what this bright young thing will be doing in a decade’s time, based on his assertion that: “I love this technology and hope to contribute to the 3D printing world.”
