Mark Newson and the Design of Things

Award-winning industrial designer, Marc Newson, talks to Crane.tv about the nature of design and his perspective of it both historically and geographically. Mark’s self-awareness in the video below is apparent as he discusses his affinity with designing and creating from an early age. Talking of “the evolution of digital technology with relation to design,” Mark acknowledges 3D printing as a tool within this evolution and how it is enabling a whole new generation to engage with design in ways previously unimaginable.

Having worked on inspirational brands such as Nike, Ford and Qantas, Mark Newson was awarded a CBE for services to design and appointed “Royal Designer for Industry” in the UK. One of his earliest pieces, The Lockheed Lounge, holds the record for the world’s highest price paid for a piece of furniture. A complete catalogue of his work to date has also recently been released by Taschen books.
