Introducing The Form 1+ — FormLabs' New 3D Printer Adds Up

With today being day 1 of the RAPID 2014 show, the longest serving 3D Printing and Additive Manufacturing event in the US, it should not be too surprising to see the new launches coming thick and fast this week.

FormLabs has chosen the RAPID event in Detroit to unveil its new 3D printer upgrade, the Form 1+.

FormLabs has developed a sturdy reputation since it launched the first stereolithography desktop 3D printer, via Kickstarter, to great acclaim just over 18 months ago, even despite the legal hiccups along the way. The new iteration of the firm’s stereolithography platform boasts many new features, including the ability to print faster and produce more accurate models. Other improvements to the system include a new laser, an anti-blocking mechanism and a light-blocking resin tank, which, according to company, allows for the easy storage – and protection — of resin that subsequently ensures more reliable and better quality prints.

MAMMOTH_SKELETON_CREDIT_SMITHSONIANIan Ferguson, Lead Engineer at Formlabs, commented on the new launch and the work that has gone in to it: “The Form 1+ incorporates everything that we’ve learned in the past year. We’ve given every part of the machine another look, updating it for better performance and reliability: a new laser, a new control system, and upgraded precision and quality for dozens of components.”

While FormLabs co-founder Maxim Lobovsky added: “The Form 1+ is a huge step for us. With the Form 1+, we’re maintaining our lead in providing the most affordable, professional-quality machines to artists, designers, and engineers around the world.”

In further news from the company, there is also a new material — a new black resin, which joins the White, Clear, and Grey options in the company’s growing materials library — and a new retail store in Europe. “This is the first stage of greater expansion to come,” said Luke Winston, Operations Lead at Formlabs. “We’re excited to offer better service to customers around the world.”

The quoted specs on the Form 1+ include a second-generation laser system that is four times more powerful than its predecessor, allowing it to print up to 50% faster. It also has a redesigned galvanometer control system, so it produces models with finer detail and a smoother surface finish. With the Form 1+ Formlabs will also offer a one-year warranty, at no extra cost, pointing to the confidence the team has in this 3D printer. The price remains the same as its predecessor at $3,299 (€2,799).

The company also points out that owners of the original Form 1 will have the opportunity to participate in a factory upgrade program that will bring their printer to Form 1+ specifications and grant them a new 1-year warranty. The Form 1+ Upgrade is available from formlabs.com for $749 (€599).
