Stand-Alone 3D Printing Available with Web Browser And German RepRap’s 3DPrintBox

In an effort to 3D print without a computer or laptop, manufacturer German RepRap unveils the 3DPrintBox. With the integrated storage device, the 3DPrintBox can print models without any direct computer connection. The device utilizes 3D printers with a USB interface by connecting to either an Ethernet or WLAN network. In addition to the storage device, it has the ability to integrate a webcam to monitor print status. Finally, and thankfully, German RepRap will offer the development to the OpenSource Community.

Simply put, the 3DPrintBox operates as a print server. Gcode files can be printed from any network-attached computer; therefore, it replaces the typical computer model. One of the more exciting features is the OS-independent access. The access means that mobile phones and tablets can be used to control the printer. Remote access coupled with real-time display from a webcam makes the 3DPrintBox free from in-person monitoring. In essence, German RepRap has created a device akin to immediate photo printing, but with their device, one could print from their phone. The crux for the project lies in network availability, and thanks to network proliferation, the 3D printing world will be ready to embrace this technology.

Available for 149 Euro, German RepRap plans for immediate and widespread adoption of the 3DPrintBox. The forecast may prove prophetic by making development files available to the OpenSource Community.
