Fitasy, a technology company based in Indianapolis, has announced a new scan-to-print process that allows users to create custom-fit 3D printed shoes using a smartphone. The technology aims to provide footwear tailored to individual foot shapes and sizes, addressing issues related to standard sizing methods.
Fitasy’s technology was developed by a team of engineers, material scientists, and computational imaging specialists with experience from institutions including MIT, Caltech, the University of Wisconsin, and Imperial College London.
The company plans to present the technology at CES 2025 in Las Vegas. A waitlist for the shoes is open, with consumer orders expected to begin in Spring 2026.

Scan-to-Print Process and Shoe Design
Poorly fitted shoes are linked to discomfort, pain, foot deformities, and reduced mobility. Traditional sizing relies on standardized measurements, which may not reflect the diversity of human foot anatomy. Fitasy’s approach seeks to replace these conventional methods with a digital process that captures precise foot dimensions.
The system combines spatial AI, imaging technology, and digital light projection 3D printing. Users scan their feet in both weight-bearing and relaxed positions using a smartphone, generating a 3D model. The software then produces a fit profile, allowing shoes to be printed to match the individual contours of each foot.

The resulting shoes use a triple-layer lattice structure designed to conform to the foot and distribute impact forces. The shoes are printed from a single material, which Fitasy states can be recycled and reduces waste compared to conventional foam midsoles.
“The foot is one of the most complex mechanical structures of the human body – 33 joints, 26 bones, over 100 muscles, tendons, ligaments,and more than 8000 nerves all working together to support every step. Yet, achieving a comfortable and healthy shoe fit remains a challenge for many. Our vision is to make true personalization affordable, stylish, and accessible for anyone who has ever suffered from an ill-fitting pair of shoes,” said Yujun Wang, CEO and Co-Founder of Fitasy.
3D Printed Shoes: An Emerging Trend in Footwear
3D printed shoes are steadily gaining traction in both the footwear and AM sectors. Their appeal lies in the technology’s ability to produce customized and innovative designs while minimizing material waste.
Last month, Till Steinforth, a Master of Architecture student at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and a decathlete for the Husker track and field team, created the program’s first fully 3D printed running shoe, a project that combines athletic insight, design training, and advanced manufacturing technology.

Earlier this year, luxury Italian fashion house Gucci expanded its Spring Summer 2025 (SS25) lineup with several new versions of its 3D printed Cub3d sneakers. Originally released in a limited run of just 20 pairs, the sneakers are now offered in five colors: Purple, Grey, Black, Brown, and Grey-and-White.
In Florida, footwear company Syntilay recently launched 3D printed sliders created with the help of artificial intelligence (AI). Priced at $150, these shoes are custom-made to fit each buyer’s feet. Customers scan their feet with a smartphone to generate a precise 3D model. Human designers first draft the concepts, which AI platforms like MidJourney refine into detailed forms. The designs are then converted into 3D models using Vizcom software and produced in collaboration with Zellerfeld.
