Brisbane’s Mutating Creatures Designer Products Evolve Through 3D Printing

Mutating Creatures is a Brisbane, Australia, design studio which focuses on environmentally conscious, locally made products. Its founders, German Designer Caroline Kaup and Dutch Designer Michel Cornielje, see 3D printing as a natural evolution of their work.

The studio, which specializes in lighting design, furniture solutions, and graphic art has moved to integrate a wide range of 3D printing lights and jewels into their core business of handcrafted products. In their vision, every design is a “collaboration of technology and imaginative handcraft, a constant dialogue between tradition, culture and machinery.”

The studio’s 3D printed products are mainly build in nylon (polyamide) by laser sintering.  The Mutating Creatures 3D printed lighting series seeks to evoke comfort and relaxation through geometric shapes, while their jewelry offerings seeks to take maximum advantage of the possibilities that 3D printing offers in terms of complex geometries.

The collections include: earrings, bracelets, necklaces, rings and cufflinks. In line with Mutating Creatures’ philosophy, all products combine both digital-machine manufacturing with hand made complements and finishing.

The earrings (Ear Lollies) are custom hand painted. So, are all the products in the studio’s “Second Skin” collection. The necklaces also integrate hand crafted strings and beads. The cufflinks can also be customized specifically for special events.

The studio also produces furniture items. These do not currently include any 3D printed products, but, I think that this might just be the next evolution of Brisbane’s Mutating Creatures.
