A 3DP ‘Photo Booth’ Highlights Customisation Value of 3D Printing

At the end of next week the space EYE OF GYRE exhibition will open in Harajuku, Japan, running from the 24th November through to 14th January 2013. One of the highlights of this exhibition is undoubtedly what is being hailed as the world’s first “3D Printing Photo Booth.”

Omote 3D is running a pop-up store during the exhibition, the premise of which is that visitors — with a reservation — can visit the stand and get a 3D printed model of themselves. The process involves each person being fully scanned in 3D (approx 15 minutes), manipulation of the 3D data gathered from the scan, to replicate hair colour, clothes etc, and finally the data is sent to the 3D printer. Models come in a choice of sizes, with corresponding prices. A small model (10 cm) can be bought for 21,000 yen (US$264 / EUR208 / GBP166), the medium sized model (15 cm) costs 32,000 yen (US$403 / EUR317 / GBP254) and the largest available model (20 cm) will set you back 42,000 yen (US$528 / EUR416 / GBP333). Although discounts are offered to groups. The models are produced in full colour and will be sent to participants after their visit.

This short-term project brings the true customization value of 3D printing to a Japanese audience and it will be fascinating to see the take up over the coming months through to January. It is certainly a great opportunity to acquire a truly unique representation of yourself, or more likely, your children!
