Karlie Kloss makes her way around the world marking over 100,000 miles for stunning photo shoots in 80 days. The numbers are staggering as she visited 22 cities from San Francisco to Tokyo with stops in Malaysia and the Acropolis. The trips were not without incident as 13 limbs were broken in transit. Each outfit fitted on the supermodel as if the clothes and accessories were an organic part of her being. How was this possible (considering it included a brief stint on the moon)? Well, 3D printing helped with 50 printed dolls in Karlie’s likeness ranging from 4 to 6 inches perched in various locales for one extensive shoot.
The Mini-Mes model held various poses clad in high-end couture fashion ready for close-ups and optical tricks that led to fun and beautiful images. In order to capture the model’s likeness, a 360 degree rotation of cameras worked their process as Karlie smiled and vogued (3D Scanning and 3D Modeling by Direct Dimensions). Designers did a wonderful job capturing the fabulous outfits and accessories complete with a spectrum of hued vibrancy.
Because of the intricacies accompanying 3D printing, the 3D photo shoot required an aesthetic precision that pushed all aspects of the venture to reach for excellence. “There is no photoshop when it comes to 3D printing,” observed Karlie. If there were imperfections with hair or shoe size, it glaringly showed and needed to be fixed on the spot, not later in post-production. About 100 cameras shuttered in a 20 foot circular structure. The standard required invigorated all involved to strive for a certain perfection in many ways delivered as evidenced in the sumptuous resulting photos. Kross hinted that as the technology improves, she may not have to be physically present for work. However efficient such a 3D printing reality might be for fashion, it’s a safe bet people will continue to welcome her presence.
