Visionary and inspirational E3D founder, Sanjay Mortimer has passed away

The 3D printing community is mourning the loss of Sanjay Mortimer who passed away at the weekend.

Sanjay was an incredibly well-loved, and inspirational leader who, together with his friends and fellow E3D Online founders David Lamb and Joshua Rowley transformed their hobby into a global enterprise. In the process, he helped create a community that strives to advance 3D printing and is spirited in sharing knowledge.

Instantly familiar to anyone in our industry, Sanjay had spent the past decade tirelessly committed to his vision of changing the way humanity manufactures goods. He was always approachable at trade shows, and I was fortunate enough to spend time with him over the years at trade shows, at formal dinners, and more relaxed lunches.

Sanjay’s passion was clear to anyone who had the privilege to meet him. With an early career in teaching, meeting co-founder David on a training course, Sanjay never ceased to take the time to explain and share technology with others. Not only is his legacy in the company he founded, the HotEnds he developed, but also in each of the individuals he inspired to learn more or take an active role in our community.

At E3D Sanjay devised the roadmap that the company still follows, and was able to see the Revo project successfully announced to outstanding praise. 3D Printing Industry understands his fellow co-founders Joshua and David will continue to lead the company bringing Revo to market and carry on with the innovative work done by Sanjay and his team.

Words cannot truly convey the thoughts and feelings that the loss of Sanjay bring about. I and the 3D Printing Industry send our heartfelt sympathy to Sanjay’s family, friends, and the E3D team. With this devastating news, E3D has set up a discord channel where you can share your memories and tributes to this wonderful person.

Sanjay Mortimer. 1989-2021.

A statement from E3D

“It is with the heaviest of hearts that E3D are announcing the death of one of our founding directors, Sanjay Mortimer. He passed away on Saturday 27th November.

Sanjay was a legend in our industry and played a huge role in revolutionising FDM 3D printing. As a founding member of E3D, he was instrumental to all our early developments. As we grew to where we are today, he continued to play an important role in our engineering team.

Over the last 10 years he has supported the creation of a world-leading extrusion-system engineering team in preparation for E3D’s second decade. Sanjay’s team will deliver on our vision of changing the way humanity manufactures goods.

We will reflect on how we can celebrate a remarkable man. Dave and Josh believe that the spirit of this should be maintained with an endowment in Sanjay’s name to assist young engineers in achieving their goals.”
